Jakarta holds a plethora of history lesser known to the
public, one of which is the Menteng area, once designated as the residence for
the elite during Dutch colonial rule. Since the colonial era, Menteng has been
a gathering place for the Dutch elite. However, over time, ownership of this
area underwent significant changes. Menteng began to take shape during the
leadership of Governor General Herman Willem Daendels in 1810 as part of the
development of Batavia. The area was later designed and built as a tuinstad or
garden city in 1910.

book "History of the First Garden City in Indonesia" (2001), the
ownership of Menteng's land had once fallen into the hands of an Arab
businessman named Assan Nina Daud for long-term investment activities. It then
passed to a company named Jacob P. Barends, only to return to Arab ownership
shortly after.
However, in 1908, the real estate company NV De Bouwploeg
acquired the land in the Menteng area covering 238,870 Gulden, driven by the
increasing demand for housing in Batavia. The once forested Menteng area, later
converted for upscale housing, responded to the needs of the upper-class
community.
In 1910, assisted by architect P.A.J Moojen, the Dutch
government took serious steps in managing this area. Menteng became a residence
for high-ranking officials, politicians, and the upper class of the Dutch
community. The grand and luxurious houses built depicted the social success of
its residents. During the Japanese occupation of Indonesia, the elite area and
its luxurious homes transitioned to Japanese officials, including Admiral
Maeda. Indonesian officials, such as Ahmad Subardjo and Soekarno-Hatta, also
occupied the Menteng area.
After Indonesia successfully proclaimed its independence,
Menteng remained the elite area for state officials. Starting from 1950,
officials of the Republic of Indonesia began residing in the area. The 44th
President of the United States, Barack Obama, spent his childhood in Menteng
from 1969 to 1971.
Buildings with Dutch-style architecture characterize this
area. Menteng remains one of the areas with the highest land prices in Jakarta,
